St Martins Lane is a small laneway in South Yarra, Melbourne between Park Street and Millswyn Street. The main feature of the laneway is the St Martins Youth Arts Centre. The theatre was previously known as The Little Theatre and was established on the present site in 1956. In 1978 the theatre transferred to the Victorian government, and by 1982 it was established as the youth arts centre.
This view of the laneway is looking west towards St Kilda Road. Although the theatre isn’t showing in this painting, it’s the main feature of the laneway, so it deserves a mention. St Martins Lane is also a street in London, England, and this is probably where the name is from.
The area is constantly changing, with new development of residential buildings taking place. At the end of the lane you can see an apartment block behind the car. It was recently demolished by some heavy duty machinery, and although it wasn’t very attractive, it seems like there’s a void or something missing. It had some character of its own with the lovely orange brick and white trim of the late 60s, early 70s. Most people probably see it as quite hideous, but in the next 20 or 30 years, it’ll likely become a sought after retro style.
